Answers to GENETICS exam 2011

Click here to view the answers from last years NCEA exam

Equations YOU MUST KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two equations that will help you to predict the products formed from equations are below. You must know this in order to write word equations, and then balance them.

ACID + BASE --> METAL SALT + WATER    (Neutralisation reaction)

(Bases can either be Metal Oxides or Metal Hydroxides)
(Acids will either be Sulfuric acid, Hydrochloric acid and Nitric acid)

ACID + CARBONATE --> METAL SALT + WATER + CARBON DIOXIDE

(Evidence of Carbon dioxide, bubbling. Gas can be tested using limewater)

Good luck!!

Rates of Reaction Animation

Click here to watch an animation showing two reactants in a chemical reaction. You can observe how increasing concentration, temperature and surface area lead to more collisions. This animation doesn't show one key idea........are all collisions successful? If collisions were successful, what should we see in this animation? Come and tell me the answer for a Chocolate fish!!

Investigating Carbon Compounds as Fuels

Our first internal assessment for the year involved some serious flames.

Monday, March 19, 2012

Week Eight

Dear Students

On Thursday 23 March during your regular Science spell you will be completing the Essay question for our first Internal Assessment. You will also need to hand in your exercise book with the key tasks completed.

In order to give yourself the best possible opportunity to succeed please review the two research assignments about the implications of the use of fossil fuels and bio-fuels and key task four about the number of carbon atoms in an alkane and how that effects it's properties.

You can find electronic copies of the research assignments on our year 11 science blog. http://11scihvhs.blogspot.co.nz/

Good luck from
Mr Edwards

PS Don't forget to bring your text books to class for our new topic.

Science Week Five

Homework; we are almost beginning the first internal assessment (and credits) for the year and your homework is to be completing the research task One, on fossil fuels. You will have received this in class but is you have misplaced it you can access it from the link list on the right hand side of this page. There is also research task two on Biofuels. Both these tasks are to be completed before assessment which is taking place in two weeks time and you are welcome to begin the second task now.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Biofuels

Advantages and Disadvantages of Biofuels: "Primary Advantages and Disadvantages of Biofuels

No fuel source is completely positive or completely negative. Consumers need to weigh the pros and cons of biofuels to determine whether they feel comfortable with this emerging resource as an alternative to traditional fuels."

Homework

Currently you homework is to be completing the first research task which was handed out this week. You should do this in your exercise book so it can be ticked off as part of the assessment. If you need another copy of the assignment you can down load it from the links on the right hand side of this page or click here.

11 Science 2012

We have begun the year with a topic that looks at the implications of using carbon compounds as fuels. So far we have met a family of hydrocarbons known as the alkanes. These are the compounds found in petrol, diesel and LPG and are currently being used around the world in enormous quantities.

In our practical work we've been comparing complete and incomplete combustion using the laboratory Bunsen burners.

We have also attempted to calculate the amount of energy produced from a candle flame.
